GEM4 Conference on Cancer

July 1–6, 2007
Singapore

GEM4 will organize a major international Conference on Cancer, July 1–6, 2007, in Singapore . The GEM4 Conference on Cancer will be held in conjunction with the International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies (ICMAT 2007) at the Suntec Singapore International Convention Centre, Singapore .

This conference is aimed at bringing together state-of-the-art topics and issues at the intersections of engineering, technology, life sciences, medicine and public health in the context of cancer and human health. Particular emphasis will be placed on thematic symposia, a partial list of which will include:

  • Nanotechnology platforms in cancer research, diagnostics and treatment
  • Bioimaging
  • Nanomechanics of cytoadherence in the context of cancer
  • Biophysical assays
  • Computational systems biology in the study of cancer
  • Novel materials design and packaging for drug delivery
  • Cancer diagnostics
  • Region-specific cancer issues and toxicology: from biochemistry to public health
  • Molecular and intracellular structure-property-function connections in cancer metastasis
  • Microfluidics, cell motility and cancer

In addition, a two-week long summer school will be held in conjunction with the cancer conference on the topic of "Cell and molecular mechanics in biomedicine", with a focus on cancer. This summer school will be the second in the series, following the inaugural summer school on this topic to be held in Boston in August 2006 (with a focus on infectious diseases). Strong laboratory experience and exposure to local medical research facilities will be provided in addition to introductory and advanced tutorials.

This Conference will also sponsor special events including public lectures by leading international cancer researchers and GEM4 Distinguished Lecturers.

A number of world leaders in the field, several of whom are co-PI's in some of the newly established NIH Centers of Excellence for Nanotechnology in Cancer Research, who are also researchers from GEM4 participating institutions (e.g., Harvard, MIT, UC San Diego, Georgia Institute of Technology/Emory University, California Institute of Technology), are expected to participate in this conference.

The scientific program for this conference is being developed jointly by the members of medical, engineering and science faculties at NUS and members of GEM4 partner institutions.

"Emerging global environmental health issues are serious and complex, and they require a multi-disciplinary research approach. No single institution can possibly have all of the resources that are necessary for addressing public health problems such as climate change, air pollution, and emerging diseases. GEM4 provides new and exciting opportunities to create a global network of research institutions that has the potential to tackle some of the most pressing public health problems that we face today."
—Bevin P. Engelward, Associate Professor, Center for Environmental Health, MIT
