GEM4 Launch

A ceremony to mark the formal launch of GEM4 was held on October 12, 2005 at MIT. The first meeting of the Executive Committee of GEM4 was also held on October 12, 2005, followed by a mini-symposium on Nano- and Micro-Scale BioMechanics on October 13, 2005.

"I believe that the people in this room today and your colleagues back at home might be able to find solutions to these enormous problems at the smallest levels – in the microscopic mysterious world of cells. By applying engineering principles to medical research, the GEM4 project will begin to put the pieces together – for example, we will begin to understand how infectious diseases affect individual cells all the way to the molecular level and perhaps help to predict what treatments will be effective."
—Richard Herman, Chancellor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at the GEM4 launch ceremony on October 12, 2005
